Cannot upload - freezes program; prob w/ hardware

ive read a bit, but havent found much help:

I have a new, preassembled duemilanove, but i cannot upload any code: all attempts lead to the program freezing. I would think it was my software not my arduino, but my friend just brought his over and tried it on my pc (xp) and it worked flawlessly. Is there anything i can do to "reset/restore" the arduino so that i might work... or has anyone else had this?

on a side note, when it is plugged in before i try tp upload, if i press the serial monitor, a stream of weird symbols appear in the window. dont know if this means anything.

Any help before i try to send it back would be wonderful.

There has been an outbreak of people using the wrong setting in the Tools -> Board drop down in the IDE

If you just bought your duemilanove, check if it has a atmega168 or '328 installed.

If it's a '328 you should select the "Arduino with AtMega328" option. I believe this has been made clearer in version 0014 just released.

that worked. simply amazing.
