Chlorine sensor needed - NOT FOR water

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for a chlorine sensor, that could be used for ambient air NOT water (such as pool or hot tub). All the topics that I have seen so far are related to the presence of chlorine in water.

Here's my application: I have a laser cutter, and sometime I cut material that I'm not sure what they are, If I cut material that are PVC based, it will generate Chlorine (indirectly HCl) and the following will happen:

1- It's dangerous for my health (even if I have an exhaust fan on it)
2- It's very corrosive for the cutter
3- I will be pissed off....(which can be as dangerous as point #1)

My idea would be to install a sensor in my exhaust pipe to detect when Cl is present.

anyone has an idea if such a sensor exist, and if so, where to get one ?

if you cannot get a chlorine sensor for air, you might as well let the output of the exhaust go through a water bubbler so the chlorine gas is solved/captured in the water. Then use a chlorine in water sensor.

You have a sophisticted sensor - your nose. The odor of CL2 & HCL are sharp and distinctive. You only have to test a material once briefly.

If your nose is too delicate =( then try pH or chlorine test paper. Dampen the paper then dangle it near the cutter.

does that paper change color?
then you could add a colour_recognition sensor ...

Cole-Palmer sensor might not be viable ($$$)

I like the idea of the test paper that changed color vs color recognition !

does that paper change color?

Yes. Color change the operating principle.
