When will this be updated? I want to use my paid subscription to develop ESP32 projects.
Hi @oldmannewtrix. I don't have any information about plans for an update. However, I did want to reply to point out that it is already possible to use Arduino Cloud Editor to develop projects with ESP32 boards. It is unfortunate that you are limited to using the older version 2.0.17 of the "esp32" boards platform in Arduino Cloud Editor, but you can create all sorts of amazing projects with that version of the platform, as many Arduino users did in its time. In fact, some are still intentionally using 2.0.17 since the breaking changes the "esp32" platform developers made in the subsequent releases were quite impactful.
The desktop IDE is easily updatable, but has other drawbacks. Why can this not be done on the cloud editor? The cloud editor is the newer product. I have been using the cloud editor to develop esp32 based projects, but run into limitations because of things like this. When you say “don’t have any information about plans”, does that mean that you don’t think that updates are needed?
I am not an advanced user and in such a short time I cannot use a board or library because of older Arduino core versions that don’t support functionality that I need.
If you would like to see if it is possible to overcome those drawbacks, you are welcome to make a forum topic here describing the specific drawback that is affecting your ability to use Arduino IDE and we'll try to provide assistance.
I never said that. This is what I said:
I am not involved in the management of the Arduino Cloud project, so I simply don't have information about specific plans for maintenance operations involving Arduino Cloud. Maybe one of the project managers will comment here, but I am not in a role that makes it possible for me to answer your question.
My role is to provide support to the forum members in using the Arduino Cloud in its present state.
I'm sorry to hear that. It is possible we could assist you to find a way to get the functionality you need when using version 2.0.17 of the "esp32" boards platform via Arduino Cloud Editor. If you would like assistance, just create a topic with a detailed description of the specific functionality you found missing and we'll try to provide assistance.
I understand that you don’t know about an upcoming update to fix the issues I mentioned for the cloud editor. That is the answer to my question. Thank you for your time.
There are several ways to solve your problem, but without your details it is not possible to make the best suggestion for you.
Can you explain? As you must know, there are several esp related libraries and definitions that are not up to date or updatable as they are in the IDE. The cloud development environment has some fantastic benefits that make it worth using for project development including an integrated AI assistant, much faster code compilation, cloud library storage, code backup, team collaboration, and more. These things are not available on the IDE. In the same way that a some of these things stay up to date and prevent the the need for each user to update their own libraries, I would have thought that all board definitions, hardware platforms, libraries, ect. Would be the latest on the cloud platform. My problem is that I need to use a newer version of the Arduino Core to make a piece of hardware to work. Do you know of a way to update that?
I am not aware of any way to change the Arduino core in the cloud either forward or backward.
Given all the other incorrect or exaggerated benefit claims you make of the cloud, I am concerned that anything I or anyone suggests will not be taken out of context or twisted in some way.
What you can do that may get you some assistance is to show us the specific code that does not work using the cloud as is. Then someone might be able to help.
The first thing to understand is that it is not likely that the core needs to change, but that a library has not been changed to reflect changed or new APIs.
Do you know, have the skills to change the library yourself? If not, then there are many here who might be able to help.
Ok thanks
As you already correctly determined, only Arduino can update the boards platforms that are installed on the Arduino Cloud server. However, the situation is different with libraries. The latest release of each of the libraries in the Arduino Library Manager is preinstalled on Arduino Cloud, so there is no problem with the installed versions of the Library Manager libraries being outdated. You can also import any library you like, so you can also use libraries the library has not registered with Library Manager, development versions of Library Manager libraries, or your own custom libraries.
That said, there are some potential issues regarding usability of libraries, related to the inability to control the version of the Arduino boards platforms. You might find that some libraries have been written for use with the latest version of the "esp32" boards platform, and are not compatible with the 2.0.17 version installed on Arduino Cloud due to only supporting the API of the 3.x platform versions. Conversely, you might even find some very old libraries that could only be used with an older version of a platform than the version installed on Arduino Cloud. In this case, even though you are free to install the library, you wouldn't actually be able to use that library/library version in your project (either due to a compilation or runtime error caused by the incompatibility with the installed version of the platform).
This might be especially likely to occur with the "platform bundled" libraries (e.g., "SPI", "WiFi", "Wire") that are normally distributed as part of the platform. These are typically tightly coupled with the platform's API, and the developer is less likely to make provisions for backwards compatibility with other versions of the platform. So even though you are free to import a newer version of a platform bundled library to your Arduino Cloud account, it may not be compatible with the version of the platform installed on the Arduino Cloud server.
