I bought a second physically identical UNO R3, but when I put the same sketch into both, the new one does not upload. Some suggestions would be appreciated.

At a guess you have not installed the driver for the second one. Is it recognised by the Operating System when you plug it in to the PC ?

Got the COM port specified.
But exit status 1 means a compilation error, doesn't it? The IDE is not attempting to upload anything.
