I have a 9 pin D-type female, with wires soldered to pins 2, 3 and 5.
What is the simplest way of hooking this up to the Yun so I can address serial data received through it?
Thank you,

What are the voltage levels of what will be connected to pins 2 and 3 of the connector at the other end of the cable?
Its just standard RS232.
Then you will require a RS-232 to TTL serial converter cable or module. This converts the voltage and inverts the logic needed to be used with microcontrollers. Here is just one example:
Oh....I was rather hoping that there were already other UART's availble on I/O pins.

Yes there are but they are all TTL voltage and logic levels. You need to convert the RS232 +/- 12V to TTL 0 to 5V. Also when RS232 is negative the TTL needs to be +5V and when positive it needs to be 0V.
Thank you, I'll have to look into it.
Is it possible to connect a D-type to the USB Com port? If yes, what do I need to buy?
How about this?

Is it possible to connect a D-type to the USB Com port?
Not directly. However you can get a USB to RS232 converter built into a cable.
There are lots, here is one:-

Just ordered one of these.
