Controlling Larger non-"toy" Motors

Is there a way for me to control a motor big enough to rotate a two by four with the Arduino?

Thank you in advance'

What's the ultimate goal ?
Spit-roast , Yagi antenna, Radar dish , Potters wheel .. Just for the heck of it ?

make something similar to this crazy thing I found on youtube, but with more control.

Sure, with transistors.

Had a look at industrial Steppers on Ebay ?
Otherwise, what sort of Kg load are you thinking of ? You can control any motor that lends itself to speed control; you just need to devise appropriate power buffering to adapt to the motor load.
Some motors can't be speed controlled, from memory, squirrel cage motors are constant speed. If you try it, you'll overheat the armature due to excess eddy current. Then again, that was long ago when I did my apprenticeship.
