Distance sensor for short distance and small object

Good morning,
I have a tool that moves on X and Y axis (below in the image). I need to put the tool on the closer point of the cylinder. I'm looking for a distance sensor. The cylinder is 5 cm of diameter and the tool starts at 10/20 cm from the cylinder on the y direction . The tool moves on the y direction to find the closer point than on the x direction to stay at 1 cm fron the cylinder. So the range is max 20 cm min 1 cm.
Do you have some suggestions?
Thanks

Good morning!

I´m not sure you can get 1 cm to the min. distance with the most common sensors that are used in the hobby field. Take a look on this page:

Types of distance sensors and How to Select One

Thank you , both useful links.
My doubt is that all sensors can detect the object but not the nearest point of it.
The problem can be describe also in this way: I have a two axis tool that start in left/botton corner, then I place the cylinder random in a 20x20 cm area and the toll has to put close to it, at 1cm.
Can you suggest also a different kind of sensor?

If your object and tool are metal. If you can make an isolated electrical circuit to include both. Then when the tool touches the object, the circuit is complete and you know it is really close.
You can use a search algorithm using x and y movement to find the touch point, then back away any distance you want.

Of course it can. Move the tool until the sensor reports that it has reached the nearest point.

I found and old tool catalog with some possible solutions. Do an internet search for: electronic locating gauge, co-axial indicator.

I'm not sure because of the angle of view of sensors and since the object is small the result can be the mean of the distance, but I will try, thanks

Hi Paul, the object is not metal. In any case in this way I can find the objet but I cannot say wich point I'm touching. Thanks for your suggestion
