Domotique house

Hello i want to do a smart home: control like 20 light/plug, to do this i've think to use a arduino mega with an W5100 ethernet shield, some relay but to activated a relay with the mega but i would not wire between the relay and the mega, can i use some esp-8266 and if yes how many esp-8266 can connect to the same mega+shield?

Thanks to your response and sorry for the spelling i don't speak very well english

to Mega you need to connect only one ESP8266. but then you need a WiFi connection for the relay side.

why DIY? there are many of the shelf systems you can choose.

I've choose to DIY because i'm student and i've no lots of money and it's more fun to do it myself, do you know a module who can fulfill the same function but witch i can connect nearly 20 modules on one mega ? And yes then i must change the ethernet shield to a wifi shield.

see Wemo from Belkin. at least for the inspiration how could your system work. they use ESP8266

The problem of the wemo it's one cost 50$ i need 20, 20*50=1000 and it's not a budget I have

Last time I looked on ebay they were about $5 each.
The bare ESP8266-12 modules are half that price.
Leo..

You might be able to make a remote relay cheaply, but I doubt you could build a "nice" remote switch for the price of an X-10 Dimmer-switch. I'm not sure I could build that at all! It works locally/manually or remotely, it doesn't require any re-wiring of the house, and it all fits into a regular switch-box.

You might want to consider building the transmitter/controller and buying the switches & outlets.

I've had an X-10 system for more than 20 years (it's now a combination X-10 & Insteon*). I've got about 10 controlled lights/outlets, a master timer-controller, and a few manual remote controllers around the house, plus a motion sensor that just controls one of the light switches.. I didn't build any of it. My system isn't controlled over the Internet or with a cell phone, but since it uses a standard protocol I could add those features. And if I want to add another switch or outlet, I just order it and once I get it, it takes about 10 minutes to install it.

 • Insteon switches/dimmers (X-10 compatible) are about twice the price. Or, there are a few other home automation standards/protocols. And for some reason, Wi-Fi doesn't seem to dominate... at least not yet... You might need a router/bridge between Wi-Fi and your home automation network.
