DVD Drive motors for CNC

So I got these 2 motors from old dvd drives because Im gonna try and follow a video tutorial for a small cnc: (How to Make CNC Laser Engraver at home - YouTube)

The problem is one of the motors has the 4 terminals exposed, which I can work with but the other one has them hidden behind part of the metal structure. It seems itll be complicated to reach. Could I somehow use the flat wires (which are still connected to the terminals) somehow?

Thanks for the help.

Can you not just remove the motor, solder new wires onto the terminals, and then reinstall it?
You could always connect longer wires to the flat wires but it seems to me that would be more fiddly than just removing the flat wires and putting your own on.

The copper in the flexible printed wiring is exposed in the end where it was pressed into the connector. If you are skilled, you can clean and flux the copper and solder wires to end.

Or even desolder the flat-flex connector from the DVD pcb?

This is a stepper motor, but the current setting may be tricky to ascertain - if you can find the motor drive chip
on the pcb and look up its datasheet that might be useful for getting information about how to drive the motor.

OK I hadn't noticed how easy it was to remove the motor. So I did and I just have one last question, is it just 2 pairs of wires per motor which are indistinct? Meaning there is no polarity or order?

As long as you get the two wires from each winding going to the same driver, you will be all right in that respect. If you swap the wires in either of the pairs you will reverse the direction of the stepper so you may need to do that if it appears to go the wrong way.

Other than that you will notice no difference in the operation.

Thanks. One last thing that has to do with soldering. And it has happened before so I know it has something to do with the material. I have these headers that (according to the tutorial) I'm supposed to solder the wires from the motors to the male end (pins) but it seems solder won't stick to them at all. I tried heating the pins but that melts the black plastic.

What else can I try?

Not sure I can help you there!

That's cool. Ill just solder wire to wire onto some female header wires. Thanks!
