I can only speak for Linux. Yes, on an Ubuntu Computer, you'll see nothing when you plug the Arduino Q.
But when you fix the permission problem with udev, see [SOLUTION] Arduino App Lab Ubuntu does nothing when selecting the board, the Q shows up under dmesg:
