Fiber optic Ethernet?

Hello I was curious if anyone got a fiber optic network connection running on arduino? I see some prototype shields online for comms or other things. I just just curious for an internet connection if anyone got it to work?

Joseph

Can you clarify where / which role you are looking at for the Arduino ?

Hi, @josephchrzempiec
Google;

arduino optical fiber

Tom.... :+1: :coffee: :australia:

Looks interesting

@J-M-L Just another way of connecting it to the internet. Same as if. I was with Ethernet. I know I can do a media converter box that already does that. But I was curious if there is something out there for arduino?

Yeah I’m hoping too look for something. Be because where i want to put my arduino project at only thing they have is fiber optic internet connecting and no either net or wifi.

Sorry for the late reply back. I thought I got the flew bit somehow it came back with a vengeance.

But do you have fiber straight of your ISP or fiber optics cables at the back of a switch instead of plain traditional Ethernet cables ?

(An ISP fiber link requires an optical network terminal with a compatible optical transceiver, GPON or XGS-PON MAC, encryption, authentication, and provider-specific provisioning… )

The "fiber" part of an internet connection isn't very interesting from an Arduino perspective. You'd still be running Ethernet, or UART, or some other common protocol on the Arduino, with different hardware in between the Arduino and the fiber. And the usual use of Fiber for Internet implements very high speeds, that the Arduinos are not capable of, anyway.

(Nice electrical isolation, though!)

Most neighborhoods had fibre forced upon them.

That’s not my question, we move to fiber to homes around the world n stead of copper and it’s a good thing overall.

My question is about what’s at the other end of the fiber.

@J-M-L sorry for the late reply. There is fiber from the isp. Going to a fiber gateway modem that has fiber coming out and going to a fiber switch.

Hey @westfw good to see you. And you are right it isn’t very interesting from
An arduino point of view. I currently have a media converter that goes from the fiber internet to Ethernet internet for the arduino. I was just curious if anyone has done or worked on a project with straight fiber internet connect to arduino.

My house and work is all fiber. No copper for the internet and even the tv cable box at my house is fiber too.

OK and you want fiber out this switch into your Arduino’s Ethernet module rather that use a traditional Ethernet cable ?
