First project doesnt work

Hello, i created a circuit from an arduino starter kit. A light is supposed to lit up when i press a button. But when i press the button nothing happens. When i put in the usb-cord the light on doesnt even lit up. It does lit up when i remove the red and black wires.
I was supposed to use a 220 ohm resistor, i found a four band resistor, with a red red blue blue colourcode. It should be red red black black, but my kit didnt provide that. Maybe that is the problem, i am not sure.

I uploaded a picture, i hope that someone can point out the mistake i made. Thanks in advance!
Maarten

Can you scan or link to the Starter kit instructions?

It looks like there’s nothing in that photo that will do anything.

Use Google to find out about the colour codes. No need for helpers to type info that already exist.

Posting real schematics, not toy pictures, gives You a better response.

Which light are you referring to?

Can you just connect the usb power with no other wires connected and run the blink sketch on the Arduino?

Best is to wire those switches diagonally across the button to ensure picking up switched legs. Connect leads to A and D or B and C
pushbutton

Yes the blink sketch works. In the sentence you mention I referred to the green light on the Arduino-plate. That light does not light up when I put in the cable, wile the project is connected.
I think I used the switch correctly, as you draw it.

There may be a problem with the crimps inside the wires.

Try different wires.

If you have a DMM, take some voltage/resistance measurements to check the components/wiring.

Here is the project as it is presented in the book:

this is the schema:

I do not have a DMM, but i ll try different wires. thanks for the tip.

Can anybody tell if the ON-switch on the Arduino-board is supposed to be on? Regardless of the project.

If the resistor is too large of value, the LED may not work.

Did you try a different LED ?

This sounds like there is some sort of short in your circuit. To trouble shoot, you can break down into pieces. For example, with just the two red/black power wires connected to the breadboard, does the power light show? If all is good, then follow on from there adding elements. If the light is off at the first step then there maybe something defective with the breadboard.

Do you mean like this?

I see no green light, there is a power source connected.

@cattledog thank you that was it, the rows on the left were somehow defect. When I used the rows on the right it worked. Now I can push a button and the light lits up

Go back and try the other rails again.

They still dont work. I put the project to the left and there was no action again. Now I put it on the right again and it works.

I think I can use the rails on the right from now on? Of is the usage of both the left and right rows sometimes neccesary for more complicated projects?

As you move along in your Arduino adventures you will most likely need breadboards. I do have some projects where it is convenient to use both power rails.

You can ask the vendor for a replacement of the defective one supplied with the kit, and you would be getting ahead of the game to order a few more to have in stock.
