Gear position Sensor (determine gear engaged gear thru resistance)

Hello guys, im wondering on the best aproach of reading / determining de engaged gear on a bike that has a resistance based GPS.

The thing is , if i go the simple Ohm meter route, im thinking it will cause all kinds of electronic havoc on the electronic CDI, as its where its connected by default and it changes ignition advance based on that resitive value.

Any tips or warnings about this approach?

Leave it connected and just read the voltage.
