Getting rid of "1 new messages" in my Inbox

I received an (unwanted) PM a week ago. I have read it, but at the top right of the forum screen it still says "1 new Messages". Before this particular PM, this always changed to zero after I had read a PM but this time it won't go away.
Is there a "Mark Read" or something I am missing?

And on a related topic (once this is fixed), can the forum be changed so that if the number of new messages is non-zero, that message is displayed in a different colour, e.g. red?

That's how it works for me. Is there an earlier message you have not viewed? Maybe you were sent two and the second is on an earlier page.

I only have 5 messages and have read them all. I'd like to keep them for now, but if I have to I suppose I could delete the lot and hope that cures it.

I received another PM yesterday and now the message count is back to normal.
