hi guys,
I am trying to 3D print a box to hold the GIGA display but to my surprise I have noticed that the datasheet is very poor on measurements, how is this possible?
I wanted to ask if anyone has the measurements of the datasheet with the missing dimensions.
in particular I would really need the distance of the 4 mounting holes.
Hi Nocentini,
not sure this helps, but seems someone has already done the job https://www.printables.com/model/605051-enclosure-for-arduino-giga-and-giga-display-shield, If you still need the measures, I can take them from my screen once back home. Let me know
hello!
thanks for your reply, I'll try to make do with this model and see what I can do!
it's a shame Arduino gets lost in such trivial things, like not putting dimensions on drawings....
no, I cannot use this model.
Unfortunately the file is in STL, which makes editing it really complex.
unfortunately I need a fairly high degree of accuracy.
I've also tried to take the measurements myself but it's really very complex.
someone from the arduino team should really take care of adding the correct drawings
I started with the files available on printables for my project without any issues. this is the link to my cad file: Onshape
Have you tried the interactive viewer?
You can click on the different holes or the like and it shows the locations:
yes, the only problem is that you can't determine the rounded edges with the origin of the reference axes.
I simply went by trial and error by now, printing so many test pieces
I just stumbled on this myself. Using my trusty ruler and aging eyeballs, I concluded that the hole pattern is on a 96 x 70 mm rectangle. This jives well with the board size of 106 x 80 mm, in that each hole is 5 mm from the board edges. YMMV.
@KurtE where can one find this interactive viewer of which you speak? I looked around briefly and no joy. Is this maybe a feature available if you have an Altium seat using the PCB files?
Click the globe icon here on the GIGA Display Shield documentation page:
Thanks. But, I notice an error in the results. As you can calculate from the XY coordinates of the holes, the measurements I made are correct. But, the reported distance is wrong.
- 70 mm displays as 67.1 mm
- 96 mm displays as 93.1 mm
I think what's happening is that the tool is reporting edge-to-edge distance, rather than the more traditional center-to-center distance. If you click on the mounting hole, it shows a 3.2 mm hole with a 2.9 mm pad (!). If you measure the distance from the edges of these imaginary 2.9 mm pads, the distance that the interactive tool reports is correct. But even that isn't a real feature that one could physically measure. You could measure the distance between the edges of the holes, but that isn't what the tool reports.
I've run into this and hence stumbled on this forum post! Arduino, that's so annoying! I filed a report with them and provided them feedback to make it easier on us and provide proper dimensions on their PDF datasheet.
However, it seems the interactive viewer can be used to some advantage. Instead of clicking on the measurement tool, just click on the pad (or hole) of interest and note its X and Y coordinates. 0,0 is the bottom right corner, and the board is 106 x 80, so @the_stumbler got it right by using his trusty ruler and eyeballs! The mounting holes are 5mm each from the edges.
Hope this helps!
Thanks,
Sridhar
