Having Trouble Burning Bootloader With 16mhz Oscillator to ATmega8/328P Using MiniCore

I'm having trouble with the bootloader. Whenever I upload to an ATmega8, or 328P, it's successful, but it does not work for replacing my uno chip. I am using this programming shield on a MEGA2560 R3

Under tools, I select ATmega8, (or 328P) 16mhz external, and arduino as isp. I'm using this boards manager url:
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/carlosefr/atmega/master/package_carlosefr_atmega_index.json

This is the compiling

avrdude done. Thank you.

I could be completely wrong, but I think the problem is that it says "Oscillator: off"
And yes, I have Arduino ISP loaded on the MEGA2560.

I'm new to the forum, so please tell me what I can do better with it.

The output you posted looks good.
Perhaps I'm being silly, but you are aware that burning the bootloader won't make an ATMega8 a replacement for the one on an (old) UNO, are you? In addition to the bootloader you'd also need to upload whatever firmware it is they have on there. Perhaps you can get this from Arduino as well; I'm not sure.

Okay thanks for the tip. I also tried an ATmega328P and it did the same thing and does not work with the uno after bootloading. I've watched a couple videos on bootloading these things for the uno replacement chip.

In addition to the bootloader you'd also need to upload whatever firmware it is they have on there.

I believe the firmware is only for the 16U2. From what I've read and watched, if the bootloader is installed correctly on the chip, it should just work with the uno.

This is the version of my uno.

I don't think so.
What bootloader are you using and where did you read that only the bootloader is needed on the 8u2 to make an Uno work?

I'm using the 'Burn Bootloader' button in the Arduino IDE. Read this
I am not using the same setup he has, however essentially all he does to the ATmega328P is burn the bootloader the same way I would.
And yes, the rest of my uno is fine because I swapped chips from another uno and it works.

And sorry for any possible confusion. I am trying to replace the ATmega328P, not a 16U2 or 8U2.

So what are you messing with trying to burn an ATMega8 bootloader to anything??

Given the output of your earlier exercise it looks like you've been burning a bootloader to the 8U2 on an old Uno R1. Does that Arduino still work?

Can you confirm you have a DIP 328P there? If so, just put on a breadboard, two 100nF caps at both Vcc pins, hook up GND and +5V from an ISP header and connect RST, MISO & MOSI to the appropriate pins. Then burn the ATMega328P bootloader to it. It should then accept incoming sketch uploads on its UART upon boot.

Sorry, I don't really feel like reading something that apparently does not accurately reflect your situation.

You're best off now with posting a schematic of the programming setup you've been using with very clearly indicated which chip is where and what is connected to what else.

Sorry. At first I tried an ATmega8, but moved on to an ATmega328. Also the two should be interchangeable according to this website: Can I replace an Atmega8 with an Atmega328? - Electronic Guidebook

I do have a DIP 328P. I wired it up as shown here with the exception of two 100nF caps at both Vcc pins. I am using a MEGA2560 to burn the chip NOT AN UNO. I also do not have long wires from the oscillator to pins 9 and 10 of the 328P. There is also no internal breaks in the wires. I used a 10k resistor, two 20pf capacitors, two 100nf capacitors, a 16mhz oscillator, and all the correct wiring.
imagen

It still gives me the same thing and does not work with a KNOWN WORKING UNO:

avrdude done. Thank you.

It just seems to me like it is not registering there is a 16mhz external clock.

Also when I use the same setup and upload code, the code works perfectly. The bootloader for whatever reason just doesn't work.

Ok, so technically it seems that your boot loader burns fine and you can upload code over ISP.
Can you talk to the 328P over UART, using an external USB<>Serial adapter - or a 100% certain known-good UNO? So upload code to the 328P via ISP, with the example sketch using Serial to send some stuff to the outside world over UART, plug 328P into USB-UART adapter or UNO and see if you can receive what it's saying.

This is a setting you make when burning the bootloader. Since you still haven't told much about what bootloader you use, I don't know what you did. I usually use either the Arduino Nano bootloader which assumes 16MHz external, or a MiniCore for the 328P which allows me to set the oscillator any which way I like.
I'm not positive if the 'Oscillator OFF' message should be interpreted as 'bootloader being programmed with no oscillator'. In fact I'm quite sure that is NOT what it means at all.

Ok thanks for the info. I wasn't 100% sure that it actually meant there is no oscillator. This is a screenshot of my computer

Ok so I uploaded a simple serial test to the 328P, put it in the uno, and I can indeed read it meaning the rest of the uno is good right? I just still cannot write to the 328P using UART, or a known good uno. It just says it is out of sync. That would be a bootloader issue right?

Not necessarily. Could also be a problem with the clock being slightly out of sync, an issue with the 8u2/16u2 firmware (especially if you inadvertently updated it in your experiments), a problem with the rx line on the 328P through the UNO board (reading its output on the serial monitor only verifies the tx works), and, yes, an incorrect clock setting in the fuses (which are burned just before the bootloader is uploaded).
Personally I'd first verify that you have both tx and rx capability on the 328P, and then I'd probably try to upload code to it on a breadboard using a USB<>UART adapter. Basically simulating an Arduino Nano as it were.

Note in your screenshot that you have Bootloader: "No Bootloader" selected, so you are ONLY setting the fuses, no bootloader is being burned.

If I have 'Bootloader' selected, it fails instantly. I think it is only if you have the bootloader already installed in the chip that this option works. Here's the code with the bootloader selected:
Error while burning bootloader.
It literally didn't work at all.

Isn't the L light on the uno supposed to blink to show you that the bootloader is working after burning? It shouldn't matter if RX/TX is working in the uno for this light to blink right? From what I've read, this led blinks after uploading the bootloader. I have also tried multiple 16mhz oscillators and none of them seem to work.

I found another forum where it seems like the guy is having the same problems as me:

The forum is a little confusing at first, but at the end he explains exactly my problem. The issue was never resolved however.

The selection should be Tools > Bootloader: "Yes(UART0)", and no, there is no requirement for a bootloader to already be on the chip. The only requirement is for a crystal or other clock signal to be applied to the chip if the fuses are currently set for an external oscillator.

Do you have a capacitor between the RESET pin of the Mega and ground? That is sometimes needed to prevent the Mega itself from resetting during the process.

Yes I didn't do a good job explaining, I'm still testing all the variables but I presume I just wasn't making sense. I haven't read this thread but make sure you are connecting the pins on your target to were they actually need to go on the host. For the longest time I was hooking reset up to the icsp header. It wouldn't work and I would test it with a multimeter and it would be fine but the problem is actually that it needs to go to pin 10. Tldr don't ever assume that your equipment is correct.

You also need to be careful when using a Mega, because the hardware SPI port is NOT on pins 11, 12, and 13. Presumably the wiring in this case is at least correct for the SPI lines, because the device signature is being read correctly.

Doesn't look like it.
You have a working 328P that you can upload code to which executes just fine. That's a completely different situation.
Like I said earlier, try uploading code to the 328P via its UART but without using the UNO. Once that works go back again to see if you can get it to work in the UNO.
