I got an Arduino Duemilanove interfacing with a Sure Electronics 0832 Display http://www.sureelectronics.net/goods.php?id=907.
After downloading some reference code and pointing to a few libraries, I got it working. This is the code I'm running at the moment.
Here's where I need help. This application is for a helmet and I need to be able to see through the LEDs. Is it possible to detach the LEDs from the Sure 0832 electronics? Ideally, I would like to make my own LED mesh and just run wires connected to the Sure0832 board.
Any ideas?
For such displays they will probably be using bare-die LEDs. These are raw chips soldered to the board and then connected with very fine gold wire. If that is the case you would have to scrap the LED's and buy the equivalent LED's in packaged form.
If you are lucky they might be using surface-mounr LED's You will still need specialized equipment to remove the LED's from the board and a very steady hand to connect wires to the surface-mount pads. It will not be easy to wire surface-mount LED's.
Those matrix's are soldered into the board. It may be possible to desolder them, and add wires to extend them from the PCB, but it doesn't look easy. Even then you probably couldn't see through them. Maybe just place them above your eyes, and leave hidden eye holes below the LED matrix.
Can you post your code? Or some of the animations? Pretty cool.

It would probably be easier to install a color LCD behind the 0832 and use a remote camera for vision assistance than mess with all those LEDS and still not have a very good view though them all.
