Looks like a USB comms problem.
First it would be helpful if you could provide some further info:
What OS are you running on?
What IDE version?
Which UART chip on the ESP8266 - CH340G or CP2102?
Have you tried a different USB cable?
If it has the CH340G, have you installed the driver?
Have you selected the correct port in Tools | Port?
