How to change Arduino Mega 2560 to run at 8MHz or 1Mhz?

How can I upload an 8MHz or 1MHz bootloader to the Arduino Mega 2560? Does anyone have a .hex file for this?

Hopefully this is the right board for this. I did some searches on switching from a 16MHz bootloader/code to 8MHz or 1MHz with the Arduino Mega 2560 (links below), but none of which in detail (IE fuse settings,. I made a new boards.txt file including a mega_8MHz version and saw the clocking change with an oscilloscope and proceeded to change some delays in my code. Until recently, it stopped uploading successfully and I had to resort to restoring the bootloader twice with Atmel Studios using an Atmel ICE on the ICSP.
