The FreeNode #arduino channel seems fine to me. A bit quiet, maybe. It's a big holiday weekend for christians, and it may also depend on what hour you visit an IRC channel. Some channels require you use a "registered" nickname, so try /msg nickserv help to learn about the nickserv (nickname services facility).
