There's a CNC shield that you can get for an Arduino UNO that controls 3 stepper motors. It's usually used with a specific sketch that interprets g-code generated by various 3D design packages. I think it might be expandable to 4 channels but you would need to check.

Giving your background I'd suggest to use RC-servos, 50kg types go by ~ 15 bucks on aliexpress.

As well as the motors & electronics, you are going to need some plastic/metalwork to create the physical structure of the arm as well as all the various nuts & bolts etc. That's a big project involving quite a lot of design work.
