I2C Backpack with RGB Backlight Character LCD

Hello guys. I am planning to purchase RGB Character LCD like this one or this one

These modules use 18 pins instead of the normal 16, due to their RGB LED. I don't have this many pins to spare on my Arduino, and therefore I want to use i2c backpack.

I was wondering if i2c backpack would still work normally, if I desolder the last two pins of the backpack (LEDA and LEDK) and connect my own wires to the LCD's LED pins, allowing me to drive backlight LED myself?

Thanks for the help

Looking at the pinout labels on the back, you should be fine. If you hooked all 16 pins up it'd still work, but you'd be limited to a red backlight.

One of your linked sellers has also RGB LCDs with built in I2C support. You don't need an additional adapter with these displays.

I decided it was a bit too expensive. That one you linked would cost me 30 dollars whereas the one I've already bought now was only 9 dollars. Also, it seems that some manufacturer somewhere along the line has revised the I2C version of this display and now it uses SN3193 LED controller, which is different to the old PCA version that's been discussed on this forum before and the new driver doesn't have any Arduino support (or really any mention online, for that matter)

Here's a listing of the I2C version using the new SN3193. You can see the seller wrote in the description about the lack of support. I guess if you're looking for a project you could go and earn your 5 free displays, lol
