IDE 1.6.12 can not add url to board manager

Total NOOB here. Probably doing it wrong, but I am trying to enter url for esp2866 into board manager. I typed(wont let me paste) http://arduino.csp2866.com/stable/package_esp2866com_index.json in File/Preferences/Additional Board Manager URLs: I click GO and then I go to Tools/Boards Manager/Type/Contributed and the ESP2866 is not there.

beachcat42:
http://arduino.csp2866.com/stable/package_esp2866com_index.json

That URL is incorrect. It should be http://arduino.esp8266.com/stable/package_esp8266com_index.json
Note the "e" instead of "c".

Good eyes Pert! But I am afraid that my typo was just on my post.

I am running IDE 1.6.12 on an older Windows7 Laptop. I have had no problems with UNO's and clones.

My current boards manger enter using the prefs file in notepad

"boardsmanager.additional.urls=http://downloads.arduino.cc/packages/package_mkr1000_index.json,http://arduino.esp8266.com/stable/package_esp8266com_index.json,http://downloads.arduino.cc/PR/samd/package_samd-b97_index.json"

Just CP the ESP section unless you have other requirements too.

Thanks, Ballscrewbob, but that is still producing error downloading message and not working. Should I uninstall and reinstall IDE 1.6.12, or maybe install an earlier version?

Is a firewall blocking the IDE from the internet?

beachcat42:
that is still producing error downloading message

Please post the exact and full text of the error message. You should be able to copy it from the console after you close Boards Manager.

OK, I have tried to copy to forum, copy as plain text, and just plain copy, and this is what pastes.

void setup() {
 // put your setup code here, to run once:

}

void loop() {
 // put your main code here, to run repeatedly:

}

I have turned off all firewall settings. No dice.

That's for copying the sketch. I wanted the error shown on the console(the black window at the bottom of the Arduino IDE window). To copy that you need to use the mouse to select the text then press ctrl+c to copy the selection and paste it here.

I see you've also encountered a bug with the Edit > Copy for Forum feature, which currently(Arduino IDE 1.6.12) has its functionality swapped with Edit > Copy as HTML. The developers are aware of this issue and I'm sure it will be fixed by the next IDE release.

Every time I highlighted and copied the text in the black box it pasted what you saw above.

I still use IDE 1.6.5 r5 for ESP's from an unzipped location with a shortcut.

Its been the most stable for ESP's and maybe its worth a shot.

Thanks, I will try that.

OK, I removed IDE 1.6.12 and installed 1.6.5. This still does not work, but at least I am getting a new set of error message that I can now copy and paste

Please do not get your feelings hurt, I am the one who should feel embarrassed, but I absolutely would not whine about anything, least of all results of your suggestions. I greatly appreciate everyone's efforts at trying to help me, and would like to be welcome in this forum in the future. As for rushing out and trying to make things work without fully understanding, GUILTY as charged! See my first post.

Thank you again
