CDC must be set to enable to print on a board with native USB, like the ESP32-C3.
Which OS are you using and which IDE.
Post your sketch, inside code tags.
Holding the boot button and briefly pusing the reset button will also get the ESP32C3 in upload mode.

Using win10 and IDE 2.3.6. Latest Espressif ESP32 Boards installed
As stated in my post my problem is not uploading to the ESP32. My problem is getting the serial monitor to work, it does not seem to recognize Com4 which DM and PuTTy do.
void loop() {
digitalWrite(led, HIGH); // turn the LED on
delay(1000); // wait for a second
Serial.print("Hello");
digitalWrite(led, LOW); // turn the LED off
delay(1000); // wait for a second
}

The only IO used is D10 [GPIO 010] as Output.
Strapping pins GPIO 02,08 and 09 have no connections to them.
Another thing I noticed is that after code is uploaded, a message “Hard resetting via RTS pin...” appears but I have to do use the manual restart sw. Does this mean that the UART CTS/RTS outputs are not wired on this board to the ESP32CR3 strapping pins?

I see no problem with the code.
I uploaded it to a XIAO ESP32C3 board to make sure.
It prints "Hello" in the IDE just fine.
I hope you have used a suitable resistor with your LED.
Leo..
If you could please review my original post… the problem is not to do with uploading/running code, the only problem is that the ‘serial monitor’ and ‘get board info’ cannot see com4, everything else does. DM does, PuTTy does. USB cable must be good. The ESP32C3 was purchased from Digikey so I presume it is good kit and not a clone. Sorry for any mis-understanding.
PS over the next week I will run IDE on alternative computer to see if problem is something to do with my current desktop environment (worth a try eh). Will check back when this is done.

Absolutely worth a try. That is an excellent troubleshooting technique if you have access to a different system.
Success!! Fired up my trusty (but very old and slow) ASUS Ultrabook and dusted it off. Here is a system that works i.e compiles, uploads to XIAO-ESP32C3, Serial monitor and Get Board information all work. As a bonus, no need to use Boot/Reset buttons (I did add 2uF capacitor from EN to GND)
Boards: ESP32 by Espressif V 3.0.0 (tried 3 times to download 3.3.0 but failed)
USB Driver Provider: Microsoft
USB driver version: 10.0.19041.3636
USB to USB-C cable: same one that I used with my Desktop
Armed with this as a reference point I will go back to my desktop roll back to the above and then revise components until the problem is manifest. Will come back to report on what I find
Wawa: I just re-tested my system and truly I did not have to press BOOT or RESET button to upload and run a new program to my XAIO-ESP32C3. From info I found on-line the UART, via the CTS and RST lines manages this. Check it out
Please post a link to that page.
The XIAO ESP32C3 does not have an UART chip.
The C3 has native USB.
I wonder if your boot button is stuck.
That would explain what you're seeing.
Do you hear and feel a distinctive click when pressing it, like the reset button?
You can also measure the voltage on D9 (the boot pin).
It should normally be close to 3.3volt and LOW when the boot button is pressed.
Leo..
Yes: XIAO ESP32C3 UART is not a separate chip but is integrated into the CPU. (I understand that it is designated as JTAG).
I confirm that both BOOT (D9) and RESET (EN) are both normally at 3.3V and 0V when respective PB is pressed.
I see a lot of banter on the web on this auto-boot/auto-reset topic but have not found a conclusive method. Much hype about bad chips, some work, some don’t etc. Anyways I can attest that my configuration Auto-boots and Auto-resets consistently. Am I the only person with a confirmed config that works in this regard? Perhaps the secret lies deep in the Espressif documentation.
