I'm not sure where to post my questions

Hello World! I'm a retired IT guy with rusty C, a new project, and a desire to enter the 21st century. To that end I have a kit and the "Dummies..." book. The Arduino environment provides an embarrassment of riches and I don't have the background to make intelligent or informed design choices.

My project is the construction of a sewing table for my wife. The table height adjusts in a straight lift with a range of about 20" (50 cm). While I can do this using switches and relays I want to learn about the Arduino as a control system.

I have a variety of newbie questions about the hardware for the project. Which forum category should I go to? The initial questions will be about motor control and heavy lifting and the later ones will be about keeping the platform level during a movement.

Thanks in advance for your help and guidance.

Questions about motors and motor control would best best asked in the Motors, Mechanics, Power and CNC category. In fact, it may be better to keep the whole project within the same thread for continuity,

if fact i am already thinking of stepper motors with lead screws (just an example). Add an Uno with a CNC V3 shield for the controller, The CNC shield has connectors to make it easy to connect motors, limits switches and other sensors and actuators. Lead screws resist being back driven so no need for brakes and such on the legs.
