IR remote volume conrol preamplifier

I want to build a stereo hi-fi preamp using arduino that I can use with an IR remote to adjust volume on my home stereo. There are several such projects on the web, but I haven't found anything showing a clear roadmap of how to implement such an idea.

Can anyone recommend a basic approach to this or website that goes through a complete successful project? Is the pga2310 still a good chip to use for something like this?

Thanks.

I would like this functionality in one of my projects also, but I still have several other things to finish before I get around to this part.

I have looked at that TI part before, it seems really expensive. Have you considered these?

I didn't realize there was such a thing but it makes sense. Using a digital potentiometer may be the way to go and much simpler. On this system I really only use 1 source, which is a ps3 so I don't really need source switching.

Guess it's time to read up on interfacing with the IR receiver.

This is not exactly what you are looking to do (this project uses an IR emitter instead of receiver), but it may still be useful:
