Okay, with a brute force attack I could now widen the beam. Precise adjustment will deserve the right tool, or the cables will rip off soon.
Focusable diodes are clearly the way to go here, if multiple "matched" guns are to be constructed. The diodes would need to be protected from manipulation, otherwise a knowledgeable and unscrupulous competitor could improve his score dramatically by defocusing the beam..
