LCD Display is barely readable

I bought two of these LCD from Adafruit. The description on the web site is; Standard LCD 16x2 + extras - white on blue PRODUCT ID: 181. No spec sheet.

I am running the sketch "LiquidCrystal Library - Hello World" from the Arduino library.

I tried using a 370 ohm resistor to pin 3(Vo) and the display is still barely visible. Then connected pin 3 directly to gnd and that is in the attached pictures.

Any suggestions to make this brighter?

I needed to connect pin 15 to 5 volts with a 100 ohm resistor and pin 16 to gnd. Nice and bright now. I might use the potentiometer for adjusting the brightness using pins 15 and 16.
