Measuring angles with Arduino

I think you have to go first! Show us how you will mount the pedals and we will show you haw to connect a potentiometer.

I don't have anything built yet, but here's a diagram.

Blue: vertical support, will be on a base
Green: the pedal
Black: holding pedal to vertical support (not sure what to call this)
Yellow: spring

I need to measure the two red angles. I will have two copies of this setup.

Good! Can you allow two holes thru the blue wall to connect to potentiometers?

That would be fine; it will be a piece of plywood attached to a base.

One of these for each angle.
Attach one to the black line and one to the blue line with a shaft connection to the blue line and one to the black line.
You will need a bunch of AD connections!

Thank you! What is an AD connector? All I'm finding is something involving Amazon Web Services.

AD means Analog to Digital. An Arduino has one or more depending on which processor you have.

Oh, okay. I'm using a Leonardo, so there are twelve.

I don't quite understand how I would connect these. Would they be set up to move through a hole in the blue board?

For the green-black pot, It would be attached to the black and would likely need and escape hole in the blue. I guess the three wires to the pot would also go through the hole.
For the black-blue pot, the pot would be attached to the blue with the connecting rod going through the blue and attaching to the black.

Thank you! So the pots would be perpendicular to their supports, right?

Correct! and connected to the respective pedal with some type of connecting rod so the slider moves with the pedal.

Thank you! Can the pots be rigidy fixed to the supports and pedals, or do i need to put one end or both on hinges?

The pots can be fixed in position, but the connecting linkage needs to be able to pivot on both ends.

Thank you! That shouldn't be hard to do.

No. But make a dummy one to play with, first! Get the mechanical bugs out before trying to to connect to your Arduino.

I will do that. Thank you for the help!

Hello kj7rrv

Take a viewl to get some ideas for a construktion.

Have a nice day and enjoy coding in C++.

Posterboard or heavy cardboard is great for this. Stiff like wood but still very easy to cut and shape.
