Measuring propane tank level and reporting via Wifi

I have a buried 1000 gal propane tank. I'm interested in the possibility of making my own Wifi tank level monitor using Arduino.

The idea is based on the Generac tank monitors. They have a sensor that snaps onto the gauge and reports the level.

Any experience with this sort of project? Any recommendations on the best Arduino board/kit to accomplish this? Am also curious about picking out the correct sensor to purchase. It looks like the generac ones snap onto the gauge.

Please post a link to the sensor.

Here's a link to the Generac product. This is their LTE monitoring solution.

The sensor itself is shown in the video on that page. Here's a link to the time in the video which covers the sensor.

That sensor is part of their integrated product so the project would require figuring out what that is and how to purchase it separately.

It looks like the Generac sensor uses a WiFi protocol. It is very likely to be proprietary, which would take considerable expertise to reverse engineer.

An internet search for "remote propane tank level sensor" turns up lots of other possibilities. Add "DIY" for some project descriptions.

From what I've seen it looks like they've phased out the Wifi model in favor of the LTE.

There maybe regulations for propane tanks in your area , giving safety zones - some of which will prohibit unapproved equipment

IF you listen carefully to the audio in the video clip, you will hear that a SPECIFIC level indicator is also needed. Just the old liquid float level gauge will not work.

My pappy could gauge the tank level just by tapping on the tank. We never gave him a WiFi interface though.
