Motion sensor/motors. Not sure where to begin

I am a beginner with a very ambitious project.

I wouldlike to use audrino to make a motion sensor move some motors and pullies for an art project. The only thing i have purchased thus far is the audrino starter.

I want to hang engraved glass panels on the wall. When a viewer walks by i want them to move and reconfigure placement on the wall.

I know this will be expensive. I plan on writing a grant proposal.

How heavy are the panels? Will they move from the motors directly, use a block & tackle?
I was just working on a couple of shields with 8 relays for motors, 5A current rating.
There are other relays good for 10A and more, they're just a lot bigger.

There are lots of motion sensors - Passive Infra Red (PIR), Ultrasonic. How tight of an area did you want to look at?

Anyone have advice on where to start?

Its difficult to tell you where exactly to start since I only know a small part of what you want to achieve, so it would be helpful if you answered CrossRoads' questions and a few more I have.

How precise of movement would you like? perfectly repeatable? This governs motor and feedback selection.

Are the panels moving in 1D or 2D? This determines the mechanical complexity of supporting them.

What range would you like the motion sensing to have? Will people be within 1m? 3m? PIR sensors are super easy to integrate but you could also do something simpler and cheaper like a photodiode getting feedback from a LED if they are really close.

Answering these questions and CrossRoads' questions will help us tell you where to start.
