Fair point. Never had such an issue but I'll add one more short connector in future.
A more significant factor seems to be the recording level of my MP3 tracks. As well as the parameter set in volume() in its 0-30 range.

Indeed, well spotted!
Good point. This happened to me, too.
Turned the device 180°, and it does not work either.
Did I possibly ruin the chip?
My device doesn't work either.
I get the well known message "unable to begin.."
No sound in the speaker (not even a click when powering on), and the led does not go on.
Communication is working basically, as seen with the scope.
Yellow comes from the Arduino, blue comes from the player.
Anything is possible. I haven't done that, just to find out what happens, but I tend to think probably not.
Looks like you have comms between them.
If you are wondering if the DFPlayerMini is still usable, configure it in I/O (standalone) mode.
Connect VCC to VCC, GND to GND a 3W buzzer to SPKR+/SPKR- and a jumper wire to GND. TOUCH the jumper to IO_1 for NEXT, touch the jumper to IO_2 for PREV. HOLD the jumper to IO_1 for increase volume. HOLD the jumper to IO_2 for decrease volume.
