A few years ago I got lots of angry comments when I told people PIC is crap and they should look at ARM. Those days are long gone, and ironically here we are: one cheap crap company bought another cheap crap company in an attempt to consolidate their obviously shrinking cheap crap market share.
Good things (I guess): Expect to see Atmel ARM chips with PIC peripherals.
