Why all of a sudden am I getting each day, waves of closed topics I may have looked at or contributed to, many months ago, and nothing recent has been added to trigger a new notification.
In fact most are over 6 months old and some still have not been closed as is stipulated at the end of each thread.
Its a pain in the A*se when 6 to 20 of the threads notified should be closed and fill my unread list.

That's 1 to 3 threads a month - does not sound much to me.
No, that is 6 to 20 each morning I log on for the past 4 days.
As I have said most of them are older than 6months and have not been closed.
So why am I getting them?

It may be a login or cookie issue that prevents deletion of old messages from the system.
Hi @TomGeorge. We are in the process of moving topics from superfluous categories in preparation for their removal in order to clean up the category structure (see Updated web site 👍). I did take what measures I could to reduce the notifications this would generate, but it is still producing some. I'm sorry if this is causing any inconvenience.
If it is the bulk topic recategorization that is producing the unexpected notifications that are bothering you, the problem should go away once we complete the work. Unfortunately it is a huge amount of work since each topic must be manually evaluated to determine the appropriate category to move it to, and there are thousands of topics to be moved. So it is not something that can be completed in a day, but we are making good progress on it and I think that, in the long run, the benefits of having a less cluttered category structure will greatly outweigh any temporary annoyances the restructuring will cause.
This is just a clitch in the matrix.

If they were closed before being moved, they should still be closed after they were moved. I've checked a few and they are still closed.
Just to give you an idea how long this might take. I've moved (nearly) all topics from the root of "Official Hardware" for 2024 to various other categories; that was 870 topics (covering roughly 9 months) and it took me just over two three days.
Still to do: 2023, 2022 and 2021.
And no, I do not want to know how many to go
