Hi all, I need to control 30 stepper motors (28BYJ-48) - (5V) . Each motor has to be controlled individually. How do I do this ? With a port expander ? Could someone pls tell me which port expander is needed to use with Mega. Thanks.

I think the difference in cost between DC motor and stepper is marginal, when you add in the driver. Additionally if using an encoder, that requires more CPU. I think unless you are in the business of making 1000's and could afford to design (or order) a custom IC, steppers are probably still better for this application. Also, I would not limit the design to 8-bit AVR, many 32 bits are faster and cheaper, although of course one has to leave the warm environment of the AVR ecosystem.
