Be sure you have the right Arduino selected, Programmer (mainly Nano for me), and port. I see this message on my Linux system when any of the above is incorrect. When I write code my Arduinos print a hello message to the console, this is a great help when I Start getting errors like you are showing. I do not program them, I just connect with the serial monitor to see if all is well. When that works generally the rest works.
