Please list boot time as part of the spesifications

Hi,

It would be very nice if you could list the boot time (e.g. time it takes from VCC is applied to setup() is entered) as part of the spesification on the arduino website. Some project require to respond to a signal relativ shortly after VCC is applied and knowing this makes it easier to select the right board. This also prevents people from returning the product after they found out that the board they ordered is not suitable, which reduces administration and shipping costs.

You could probably state that this specification is applicable for the default boot loader or something.

Thanks

I don't work for Arduino and have no influence over them, but saw your post and was curious.

What model of Arduino did you try that took too long to boot up?

Most take < 1s. Even that 1s is to check for and allow new firmware to begin uploading. This makes updating your code easier during the development stage, because you don't need special programming hardware.

But once the firmware is stable and ready for production environment, you can use a hardware programmer to upload the firmware. This gives two advantages; boot time can reduce to a couple of ms and you get a little bit of program space back because it is no longer occupied by the bootloader code.

Thanks for your reply, but I am aware of the advantages of a boot loader.
I am not saying the boot time is a problem, I am just requesting that the boot time is listed as an specification, that's all.

I am working on a project where the Arduido is powered up by a master which sends a signal to the slave (Arduido), which needs to be able to respond within N milliseconds.

Then perhaps this would help you:

It can't be done that way as you think.
The boot time is rather depends on firmware than on hardware board.
As mentioned above, if you remove a bootloader, most board will take only a few milliseconds to boot.

Would it be possible to have the Arduino in low power sleep, and wake it with a signal from the master switch? This would be faster than booting.

Guys, I am not asking for a solution - I am just asking the Arduino-team to list the boot-up time (time it takes between VCC is applied until setup() is called) as part of the specification using the default bootloader out of the box for all their boards.

I know that the bootload is subject to change, but I want to know the boot-up time for the default bootloader.

That's all.

It seems that you didn't fully understand the role of the bootloader when you opened the thread, otherwise you wouldn't have written this:

Requiring hardware replacement because the software flashed into it doesn't meet the requirements is just ridiculous
