Port just disappeared in my IDE

while using my mega 2560 the port stopped working, or it does not come up now to connect to; how do I get the port back?

While you were writing or uploading the COMM port vanished?
Stop all Serial Monitors in the IDE.
Remove your Arduino from the USB port.
Close the IDE.
Open Device Manager.
Insert your Arduino into the USB port.
Watch for something in "Ports (COM & LPT)"
Start the IDE.

You'll have to look at the operating system level to see what is happening.

For Windows, look in device manager.
For Linux, use lsusb and dmesg.
For Mac, I have no idea.

Thanks. I first downloaded 2.3.7 and that fixed it too.
