Problem with IDE2.1

I was using this version of the IDE on a Windows 10 computer. It was working fine and then in the middle of a VERIFY, the open windows with several sketches open lost the top tool bar so that I lost the ability to save, move, etc. on all open sketches !! Now the only way to close the IDE is through the task manager END TASK & I can no longer move my open sketches around. Anybody have ideas on this. Reloaded the IDE with the same results !!
Thanks,
Tom

Tool bar or menu bar or both? An issue like that was reported before in A setting has changed. Did you see that "a setting has changed" popup as well?

The issue is very intermittent and difficult to reproduce; hence there is (to my knowledge) no bug report. A few times restarting the IDE has, till now, solved the issue.

What does that mean? Start the IDE again or re-install the IDE?

Hi & thanks for responding. I have restarted the IDE a few times and even shut down the computer with the
same results. Did not see " a setting has changed " at any time. I was in the middle of typing a line in a new
sketch when the event occurred and now nothing works the way it used to. Plus I can't even move the windows
around the screen.
Short of reinstalling the IDE, any other ideas??.
Thanks,
Tom

Completely shut down computer for 24 hours. Started back about 1/2 hour ago and all of the problems encountered yesterday have cleared. MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL, but the IDE is now working correctly and I am now able to proceed with my sketch and projects. Thanks for the help and suggestions !!

This annoying problem has popped up again. In the middle of modifying an existing working sketch, a message popped up that said " A setting has changed " and the upper Windows tool bar is gone AGAIN and now I have not move or other windows functions. This is in IDE 2.1 on a Windows 10 desktop computer. Last time this happened, I shut down everything for about 8 hours and upon restarting, all worked correctly except for the fact that any previous changes were not saved and had to be input again. Don't know if this is the correct place to post this, but I am frustrated at this point as I just wasted 2 + hours of time !! Please advise as to any fix to this problem !!
Thanks, Tom

Your topic has been moved to the IDE 2.x category of the forum

It happens here at occasion as well. But in general I don't loose data. I also don't have to wait hours before it comes right; a maximum of two times restarting the IDE works (till now). And yes, it is annoying.

Most of the data loss should be prevented with the auto save option. Press <F1>, type save and check if you have it enabled.

Thanks for that info. I will try it tomorrow !! Tom

Restarted everything and all seems to work normally but had to restart the IDE 3 times. AUTOSAVE was turned off & I know
that I turned it on when I first upgraded to 2.1 !! Thank again ,
Tom

Well, that lasted about 20 minutes !! " A setting has changed " came up again while I was typing a line. Same symptoms again - no windows tool bar, but I think my stuff was saved this time. Any other thoughts or suggestions ??
Thanks,
Tom

I did report the same issue a couple of months ago (A setting has changed). Check post #4 there.

On Wednesday afternoon, I downloaded and installed VERSION 2.3 of the IDE. I used it about 3 or 4 times since then and maybe -
FINGERS CROSSED - the problem has been corrected in this version. It doesn't specifically say that in the list of upgrades and
changes, but who really knows !! Now if they would only put the PRINT function back in the tool bar dropdown !!
Thanks for the help and suggestions.
Tom

Come off it !
Next you will be expecting to be able to do Ctrl+A and select everything in the Serial monitor. At least there are ways round the lack of Print functionality

I have been staying away from 2.X since atleast a year ago.

But, I needed to try 2.X to fix an ignored json libraries problem.

The Menubar appeared first time, but never after ...
Also, keeps popping up "need to Reset for update" - drives me nuts.
Shift-Ctrl-P does not help - still no Menubar - just the icons.

Can not use Boards menu, File Save, Preferences, Examples, etc...
Wish I did not install it.

Is there an end to this problem ?

Did you start a topic about that somewhere? I don't know the details of your issue but have some doubts that another IDE version will solve a library issue.

I posted about this same problem several months ago. The 2.3 version seems a little more stable but that issue still pops up once in
a while. I found that if I only have one IDE window open, it will usually work fine but that is a pain since I can't print out what I am working on !!
The Arduino gurus really need to take a deep dive into this, find the root cause of the problem, and then fix it !! Oh yeah, while they are in
there, PLEASE put the PRINT function back in the drop down menu !!
Tom

I see you already created a dedicated topic for discussion of that subject, where a solution was offered. If anyone would like to discuss that subject further, please do it over on the other topic so that this one doesn't become a cross-post:

If you change the default setting of the Arduino IDE, try to reset the setting to default setting.
