Hi,
I guess you all know those alarm clocks that can 'beam' the time on the wall. I would like to know if someone here knows a way of doing that with simplest measures? Also - is it possible to 'beam' such projections onto glass? I thought about having a glcd display and 'invert' all output so that, for example, text is not shown but everything else is opaque and put very strong LEDs as backlind behind the display and focus the 'output' through some lense..
shouldnt that work?
it would, tho the dark areas would not be opaque, most often times those projector alarm clocks do the same thing

If the glass is frosted or ground (for back projection) it would. But it would need to be a fairly bright image. As Osgeld noted, I doubt that the LCD "opaque" state is as opaque as needed for such projection (this is the "black" contrast issue you see on LCD TVs, for instance). Also, I doubt you will be able to dissect a GLCD to the point of adding your own backlight.
I am not absolutely certain, but I think the way those alarm clocks work is by using bright 7-segment (or 5x7) LED displays, and then a simple magnifying lens arrangement for the projection - rather than LCDs.
Well, i plan to build a small 'addon' for my car, basically a bluetooth slave sending GPS signals from a gps chip i would love to run as much and as long as possible as it is built in in the and driven by the same power source as, for example, the built in clock.
As a neat 'addon' for this i thought of some sort of HUD for the frontal glass... but this was only a 'is it maybe possible?' feature.. might skip that for a built in (g)LCD....
Well you could get a small piece of frosted sticky stuff for it to project on to.
My projection clock uses an LED but I am soon to be replacing it with an out of focus laser as it'll be much brighter. Not sure what it shines through but if I remember I will post it up on here when I take it apart.

What about buying such a clock and taking the projector out of it? Might be able to simply turn the LED display around to invert it and use that?
You might have issues interfacing with it though.
If I get round to taking mine apart then I'll keep you updated.

Good idea crook, yet i dont think i can show a full GPS coordinate on such a thing - most i know are simply AA:BB:CC clocks, nothing more.. :0(

If this is for car usage, you probably can't put a piece of frosted glass or film on your front window (might violate some vehicular window tinting or such law - check your local laws). Does it need to be for day and night, or night-time usage only? If night-time only, then you might be able to get away with reflection off the glass (though you will need to come up with some other method to undistort the image).
