R3 Problems On Macbook Air

Hello, I just received an Arduino R3 kit for Christmas and have run into some issues with it on my MacBook air. To preface I have a 2017 MacBook Air running Monterey 12.7.6.

  1. After going onto the website to download the IDE 2.3.4, I tried to download the most recent one (11. "Big Sur"). When I went to download it to my applications, the icon showed the Arduino logo with a slash through it. Upon downloading, whenever I tried to open it it said "this application is not supported on this mac". After deleting it, I tried downloading the earlier IDE 2.3.4 (10.15 "Catalina") and didn't have any problems.
Is this ok that I am running the older version, or is there something I need to do to run the newer one?
  2. After launching the older IDE and plugging the R3 in for the first time, the green On LED lit up, I went to tools in the IDE and selected Arduino Uno. When I went to select the port, the only ones that were showing were bluetooth ones. After looking online, I checked my USB device tree on the Mac and the Arduino's name was popping up as "ATmega16u2 DFU". Some of the things I saw online said that I needed to download an external driver, the set up book from the kit says there are no drivers needed. I am very new to all of this so any help would be greatly appreciated thanks!

It sounds like you downloaded the Silicone Mac, you have an X86 Mac.

Yep, you were right, makes sense why that wasn't working, it is an Intel. Any idea about the other issue?

Is there any way to tell if it is a data-capable usb? It is just the one that came in the kit from Arduino.

If it is a proper kit, the cable should definitely be data capable!

Ok, i've tried updating the ATmega16u2 firmware using this guide

https://docs.arduino.cc/retired/hacking/software/DFUProgramming8U2/

It is still not working, I can get to the updated firmware on github as well as the Aruino15 folder on my Mac, is there any certain way I need it to be downloaded? Right now it is TextEdit. When running the codes from the guide, it says the chip is already blank when i go to erase it, as well as saying the bootloader and code overlap.

I have never done that and would not until I had at least 3 experts give me identical instructions. My first computer was 1959 and I closed my computer company 2004, been mostly retired since.
