RFID-RC522 Not working??

So I just got an Arduino and it came in a kit with a RFID-RC522 reader writer. I soldered on the pins but it doesn't appear to have a LED in the D1 slot so I can't tell if its working when I upload the sketches? I know it shouldnt really need the LED to work because its just an indicator but once i've uploaded the sketches it does not seem to do anything when I do a Dumpinfo sketch into the serial thing? Does this mean that the board is a dud?

I will attach a photo of the Missing LED in slot D1

Any help would be greatly appreaciated!

Are you sure this is supposed to be a led and not a protection diode ?

Never seen an LED marked as D on any board.

Make the code turn on the Arduino's on board LED when it sees a card.
