I want to get a ribbon cable with a connector on the end that I can plug into the 36 pin header on the mega. I also want 8 conductor ribbon cables with connectors I can plug into the two 8-pin headers that are next to the 36 pin header. Where can I get something like this? What's the name of the connector that would be on the end of the ribbon cable?
Search for "IDC socket", I'm not sure it exist as a 36 pins...but there is a 40 pins IDC ribbon cable that you probably have already: an old IDE cable for hard drive 
I've got some of those old PC cables laying around, but they are female and I need male pins sticking out to go into the header.

I've got some equal length pin headers that are the same (right) length on both ends that work for me very well for my Itead GLCD and the mega shield for it. 2 20 pin length's and I have a M/F connector, works well for me. Simpler and a bit more common.
