Seeking recommendations for ESP32 board with built-in display

Continuing the discussion from New here, add device doesn't show Arduino R3 UNO:

Ok, let me start with what I want to do.

This is a 3.5 to 4.5 screen to display temperatures from auto sensors.

So, 4 "blocks" with text, like OIL TEMP and a temp reading above it.

I'm seeing the various limitations of parts, software, etc. And I am switching to Win 10 laptop, even though I run into YTube videos and people do mention Linux, albeit no mention of Chrome OS/Linux Dev kit.

I emailed with Waveshare (mfg) and they noted nothing they sell is tested outside of Windows.

Right now, I'd like to buy a ESP32 board with a screen built in. That I would hope would eliminate any hardware and wiring issues.

Ideally, hardware with a CD software included.

Any suggestions ? Elecrow, Wavehare, Nextion ?

Waveshare has a few of those and I suspect some others, but those displays are way too small for the amount of data you want. I have some standalone screens about 3" x 4" or maybe bigger.
CD LOL the factory shut down a while ago. Mostly you will get a QR code or a typed URL.

what'a CD software?

I like what M5Stack offers they have lots of choices

I use many stack and stick series for various needs.

M5StickC PLUS2 with its small form factor

or the larger Core 2

The screen is only 2.0" though (320*240) so might not be enough for what you are looking for.

I second the M5Stack suggestion: good hardware but the screens are small.

You can use Cheap Yellow Display. I have a CYD screen that's 7" size and cost about $30.
However, if you place any kind of value on your time, it's probably simpler to switch to a Raspberry Pi and and touchscreen. No "wiring" per se: one plugs into the other.
Cost will be around $50 for a pi and a 3.5" touchscreen last time I checked.

I have got one of these, they are very good.

There are other displays as well on this site, including touch sensor displays, and versions without the touch sensor option.

These products are of course British but this is a site you can get them from. Have a good rummage around the site.

Is Rasperry Pi or maybe the ESP32-Pi better quality than Arduino boards/software ??

Build quality is similar, it’s just a different approach since you usually run Linux on the RPi (and would likely attach an hard drive to not run the OS from an SD card)

While you can use a hard drive. The Raspberry people do have an SD card that is a lot faster.

Note the description says:-

Whilst some models such as the Raspberry Pi 4 and 5 can make use of (and benefit from) a 64-bit system, we sell these cards with a 32-bit OS for full compatibility across the range of boards available. It still works perfectly on all models, however you may want to re-write a 64-bit OS for full performance and features on Raspberry Pi 5 and 4.

They can also supply solid state "hard drives" as well. Much faster than a mechanical hard drive.

I have an SSD indeed attached to mines - I think it’s faster than the SD card but I’ve not taken any speed test…

CD's are very similar to 5.25 inch floppies :slightly_smiling_face:

So CD as in compact disk ?

So, we're thinking the Rasperry Pi is more suited to Linux ?

And - what is the pecking order from mfgs with quality parts ?

Ideally I'm looking for a screen/board with built in drivers.

I tried the shield idea with my Arduino, about all I got the LCD to do was turn on.

Trying different drivers.......

So trying to buy a hardware with as many things "built in" to eliminate problems.

I did email Wavehshare, guessing a ChatBot replies, they don;t seem to know what they sell.

So - looking for this, but with a 4-7 inch touch screen.
