I'm looking for what type of sensor would work best to detect a coin falling through a slot for recreating an old school game. Here is a link to what the game was for reference. 1958-1960 Bally Skill Roll, Lite-A-Diamond, Skill Parade, Skill Score, Skill Derby coin operated arcade game
Make it real or else forget about it.

if it is just a DIY-project and it does not matter what kind of coin you drop you can use a kind of IR-Speed sensor or Distance sensor and let the coin fall between the sensor legs. This produces a pulse on an digital input which you can detect and use for further actions on the sketch.
An IR sensor or ultrasonic sensor module should do....
You can also count the number of coins ( or whatever...say basketballs, in case of an automatic basketball score counter or something ykwis..) if you wish to....
You can find a lot of such videos and references in Google and Youtube...
Do you desire the look of the original or just the functionality?
How are basketballs detecting coins?
