Serial communications (across a wire) in a car -- best practices?

This particular project involves having the Arduino mounted in the trunk of my car and a serial display on the dash (most likely will be a 4D display). Just wondering what kind of wiring I should use. I already have a CAT5 wire in place and have a free set of twisted pairs. Do you think that will be sufficient for this or should I look at something that is better insulated against noise?

I estimate the cable run to be between 5~10 feet

Thanks

google for rs485 it is more noise resistant than rs232

What kind of speeds are you talking about?

What kind of speeds are you talking about?

Hopefully at or under the speed limit for the roads being driven on.

heheh

I'll just be updating a display so I don't think it will have to be terribly high data speed. I would start out with 9600 and go up from there if it's not sufficient

Either RS485 (2 wires + GND) or LIN (1 wire + GND) should do nicely.

LIN has a 19.2kbps limit.
