i just received my arduino NG board today in the mail and i noticed that some pins on the FTDI chip are shorted together
is the board suppose to be like that??

that's ok... lok at the NG schematic, you will see a few pins that are joined together.

please notice that EVERY single arduino is manually tested.
first the bootloader is programmed , this will catch short circuits in the processor.
then the "blink and LED " is dowloaded and this would catch problems with the USB connection
because of this we have a practically 0% returns on arduino...
