Smart Turbine Sprayer

Hi everyone,

I've been exploring the idea of creating a Turbine Sprayer for painting my car. While I know a basic setup involves wiring it into a box and using a garden hose regulator for airflow control, I'm interested in delving into electronics and enhancing this project. As a complete beginner, I'd really appreciate any guidance from the community.

In my initial research, it seems feasible to control the motor speed using a relay connected to an Arduino for more precise control. I'm also considering using PWM fans to regulate airflow within the turbine sprayer's housing for both intake and exhaust. Does anyone have suggestions on how I could incorporate a device/sensor to measure airflow or pressure at either the end of the hose or within the turbine sprayer itself?

Relays don't work to get speed control. Use a motor driver that handels the current needed.

That's a mains powered 120 V AC 1.7kw motor.
Contact the manufacturer to see what they recommend for speed control.

Are you trying to create a clone of a commercial paint sprayer on the cheap?

Since the motor is designed for two speeds, a relay or a simple switch will work to go between the two speed.

Pretty much. I found on autobody101.com that you can make a really high performance turbine paint sprayer. It’s barebones, but it’ll do the job really well apparently. I would be happy to just make a simple build, but I’ve been wanting a reasons to learn more about electronics and programming so I’m thinking about what I can do, hence asking for suggestions here.

It’s an AC motor, so would I just get an AC motor controller? Would something like this work?(ACF700-2.4 AC Motor Control | Kit 0101 Included)

You need to research car spraying equipment - there are a lot of high volume low pressure sprayer out there , and I’ve not seen one with speed control !!

I don’t think this is a viable project as there is a lot more to it than a fan , and I don’t know why you would want to speed control it anyway - output pressure from his type of fan falls off very rapidly with fan speed , and you need as much pressure as you can get .

You would also need hoses , fittings and the spray gun and time and materials to waste to get it working properly ( look at the cost of paint !)
It would be far more successful and cheaper to buy a low pressure spray system and just use it .

[There is also the issue of buying and using materials -some are unobtainable , some such as “ two pack” contain cyanide .]

Apollo do some great systems , I used one in the 1980’s to paint a car very successfully .

Yeah, I get it. The moderator of the turbine section of the AutoBody101 said that all you need will be the high speed anyway, but I just thought it would be nice to have variable motor speed for airflow control. Maybe more control is always better?

It’s a fair cop , can’t see you’d need it , but there you go.
Unless you are spraying all the time test sprays and viscosity checks would sort it
