I have the SparkFun Weather Meter Kit and I’m trying to test each component individually with an Arduino Uno R3. I started with the wind vane, but I’m having trouble getting correct readings and I think the issue is my wiring.
I’m connecting the wind vane through an RJ11 breakout board. The breakout has 6 pins, but the SparkFun documentation seems to show/use only 4 conductors. Which pins on the RJ11 breakout should I connect to the Uno if I only want to test the wind vane?
Right now, when I run the Arduino code, the Serial Monitor repeatedly prints:
Wind Direction: 270 degrees
even when I rotate the vane.
I’m also using a 10 kΩ resistor with the circuit. Any guidance on the correct RJ11 pinout/wiring for the wind vane would be very helpful!
Look at the RJ11 connector on the wind vane. Which pins does it use? The left 4, the right 4 or the centre 4? Or something else? Those are the pins you need to use on your breakout board.
You are not using one of the shields but are instead using a breakout with 6 pins instead of 4?
The cable that comes with the wind vane is a 4 pin plug but it will plug into the center of a 6 pin socket. The wind vane signal leads are pins 1 and 4 of its plug so that would be 2 and 5 on the breakout.
Well I just got the wind vane working. It's just very limited when I test it. It doesn't show all the directions and 112.5 degrees likes to occupy half of the wind vane circle. Could it be that I did the pull up resistor wrong?
Thank you! I seemed to get it to work. As I mentioned to xfpd, I'm struggling now with the direction outputs. It doesn't show all the directions and 112.5 degrees likes to occupy half of the wind vane circle.
