Hello, I could use some guidance/advice.
I'm looking to decorate my graduation cap for May 2017. My idea is to create the string of miniature LED lights with the alphabet just like in Stranger Things. I would like for the wording to spell out "Engineering"
Firstly, I'm having trouble finding a string of multicolored LED lights with small spacing. Doesn't seem like there are many options.
Secondly, I've never used Arduino, so I don't know if there is a board compatible with a small-scaled, battery powered LED lights.
I haven't bought any lights nor an Arduino board.
I don't know where to start, any tips? Does this project seem feasible?

The problems you might have are space and battery life. A small Arduino like Nano would be suitable. You would also need space for batteries, like 3 or4xAA or AAA. Maybe a phone power bank in your pocket with a wire running to your cap? What battery life do you need?
As for the leds, how many and how small? Do you need 26 and only one led flashes at a time? If so, you could make a charlieplexed matrix, which would need 6 of the Nano's pins
